ABOUT

Native vegetation in Australia is disappearing at an alarming rate through urbanisation and development. Even when left untouched these areas can degrade through neglect and weed invasion.

Wild Places aims to restore and recreate modified landscapes, turning them into healthy, resilient, attractive, and functioning ecosystems.

Wild Places is owned and operated by Phil Hunter, a Geelong local with over 20 years experience in vegetation management, consulting and plant propagation. Phil has excellent weed and plant identification skills, and has a Bachelor Degree in Applied Science: Parks, Recreation & Heritage.

SERVICES

Bush Regeneration

The aim is to facilitate natural regeneration of the existing seedbank and surrounding native vegetation. Techniques such as diligent weed control, weed specific herbicides and brushcutting are utilised.

Planting and direct seeding techniques are also used to encourage more plant diversity.

Weed Control

Know your weeds, know your enemy. By understanding specific weed growth habits and requirements, and the herbicides appropriate for them, it is possible to dramatically reduce the impact of weeds on site, and tip the balance in favour of indigenous species.

Use of weed specific herbicides is key, along with preventing seed set, and consistent diligent work.

Vegetation Quality (Habitat Hectare) Assessments

Native vegetation can be accurately assessed in accordance with this standard approach for assessing vegetation quality in Victoria. This is a requirement prior to removal of native vegetation in Victoria.

Reports can also be written, factoring in the three-step approach (avoid, minimise, offset) which is a key component of Victoria’s vegetation removal regulations.

Wild Places – Vegetation Management & Consulting conducts assessments through Mark Trengove Ecological Services. Phone 042829 8087.

Vegetation Management Plans

With a sound knowledge of Vegetation Ecology and Management, accurate Vegetation Management Plans can be written for private and government bodies aiding best practice for biodiversity in the future.

Flora and Fauna Assessments

With a sound knowledge of Victoria’s plants, birds, frogs, reptiles and mammals, accurate Flora & Fauna assessments can be carried out for private and government bodies. GIS Mapping of flora, fauna and habitat is also available.

Indigenous Plant Propagation

Wild Places specialises in growing plants local to the Greater Geelong Region. All plants are propagated from locally collected seed, suitable for the local environment.

Visits to the nursery are by appointment only, and plants are grown to order. To guarantee supply of plants for autumn/spring planting, please place your orders by December of the previous year.

Plants can be grown in hikos, tubestock, and advanced sizes.
